Lonita Jensen, a retired nurse, said she moved to Ecuador because of high prices in the US. Jensen said her apartment in Ecuador would cost three times as much in her home state of Montana. AdvertisementThis is an as-told-to essay based on a conversation with 71-year-old Lonita Jensen, a retired nurse who is from Montana but currently living in Ecuador. AdvertisementMy sister had come down to Ecuador and she said, "Well, you can afford to live down here." But any place that's pretty now is so expensive you can't live there.

The organization advocates for company and government policy that supports working parents. All companies offered some form of childcare benefits — stipends, on-site care, or backup care. And, for each company, its annual net return for childcare benefits far outweighed the cost. But, when a company offers childcare benefits, retaining just 1% of eligible working parents could cover the price a company pays for those benefits, the study said. Childcare benefits boost employees' career prospects and earning potentialNot only do childcare benefits support a company's bottom line, but the study shows it improves the earning potential and career growth of individual employees.

The largest employer in Seeley Lake, Montana, is closing in part due to costs and housing issues. An influx of people to smaller towns has driven up costs and fueled housing shortages in Montana. "Among other problems, labor shortages, lack of housing, unprecedented rising costs, plummeting lumber prices, and the cost of living in Western Montana have crippled Pyramid's ability to operate." "This is devastating news for the Seeley Lake community and all of Montana," Daines said. Communities across the West are feeling the pinch of rising costs in different ways.

In Steamboat Springs, Colorado, even high-earners are being priced out, NBC reported. The city manager said two people turned down a six-figure job after not being able to find housing. Steamboat Springs is among many ski towns in the West facing skyrocketing housing costs. AdvertisementAs many rural communities struggle to deal with a jump in housing prices, it's apparently gotten so bad in one Colorado town that a $167,000 salary isn't enough to solve the problem. A recent report from NBC News details how even high earners in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, can't afford to live there, and it's impacting the city government.

I asked him why he liked coming to Jay Peak. “Because of the Jay Cloud,” he said matter-of-factly, as if it were obvious. “It has the best snow.” As if on cue, the world outside the aerial tram car suddenly went from blue to white. The mystique of Jay Peak, the northernmost ski area in Vermont, is intimately bound to the Jay Cloud, a mythical storm cloud that hovers over its rocky summit. But another cloud, for years, hung over Jay Peak Resort: Its former owners perpetrated the biggest financial fraud in ski industry history — as well as the biggest fraud in the state of Vermont.

CNBC's Jim Cramer said Thursday he believes Jensen Huang — the co-founder and CEO of leading artificial intelligence chipmaker Nvidia — is a bigger visionary than billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, whose panoply of companies includes Tesla , rocket maker SpaceX and brain-tech startup Neuralink. Cramer's Charitable Trust, the portfolio used by the CNBC Investing Club, has long been invested in Nvidia. Cramer has espoused the brilliance of Huang for years and even re-named his dog Nvidia. Ahead of earnings this time, Cramer equated Huang to popstar Taylor Swift , saying their success is unparalleled in their respective fields. And Musk is creating, singlehandedly, a way to be able to deliver things," Cramer continued.

That happens to be the year the Met last put on a Spanish-language opera, and there’s something amusing in the fact that next to nothing in “Florencia,” which premiered in Houston in 1996, would have surprised an audience back then. You almost want to applaud the impressive, if perverse, achievement of a score that so thoroughly rejects all the galvanic musical developments since the early 1900s, when the opera is set. The action — hardly complex, but crowded — takes place aboard a steamboat in the Amazon rainforest. The passengers are on their way to hear the great diva Florencia Grimaldi sing at the Belle Époque opera house in Manaus, Brazil. There’s a swooning pair of young lovers, and a bickering married couple; a would-be Grimaldi biographer and a mystical narrator; oh, and Florencia, too, somehow unrecognized by everyone else and returning to Manaus in search of her lover, a butterfly hunter she lost long ago.

The Labor Day tragedy in 2019 spurred changes to maritime regulations, congressional reform and civil lawsuits. At the time of the fire, no owner, operator or charterer had been cited or fined for failure to post a roving patrol since 1991, Coast Guard records showed. The NTSB faulted the Coast Guard for not enforcing that requirement and recommended it develop a program to ensure boats with overnight passengers actually have the watchman. The Coast Guard has since enacted new regulations regarding fire detection systems, extinguishers, escape routes and other safety measures as mandated by Congress. Victims' families have sued the Coast Guard in one of several ongoing civil suits.

A new accounting shows that at least 523 institutions were part of the sprawling network of boarding schools for Native American children. ‘War Against the Children’ The Native American boarding school system — a decades-long effort to assimilate Indigenous people before they ever reached adulthood — robbed children of their culture, family bonds and sometimes their lives. “The government was not done with war, so the next phase involved war against the children,” said Mr. Sherman, 83, a former aerospace engineer. Now 76, his voice grows shaky when he recounts the punishments children received — and how children were turned into punishers. Library of Congress, Chronicling AmericaA precise accounting of how many children died at Native American boarding schools remains elusive.

Signage is seen at the headquarters of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Washington, D.C., U.S., May 12, 2021. The SEC said Impact Theory marketed its Founder's Keys--sold in "Legendary," "Heroic" and "Relentless" tiers--as a means to profit from its business by investing at an early stage. Impact Theory allegedly raised $29.9 million by selling 13,921 Founder's Keys in late 2021, and received $978,000 of royalties from secondary sales. The SEC said Impact Theory also compared its NFTs with "handing ($20) to Mark Zuckerberg in his dorm room," referring to the billionaire Facebook co-founder. SEC commissioners Hester Peirce and Mark Uyeda partially dissented from Monday's settlement, saying the regulator owed investors better guidance on NFTs.

ZANDVOORT, Netherlands, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Alfa Romeo driver Valtteri Bottas settled for a six-pack after winning his weight in beer in a cycle race in Colorado over Formula One's August break. "The prize for the best costume was your weight in beer, and I really wanted to win the prize," said Bottas of last week's event. "I was thinking about it, obviously being mainly an American crowd, so I went for The Simpsons and Duffman." Bottas admitted his favourite character was Homer Simpson but also figured it would be tougher riding uphill dressed in that guise. He also rode a 100-mile gravel race on Sunday, finishing 20th out of 926 entrants.

Since then, I've built far more skills and become far more independent than I could've in college. So I dropped out and decided to live out of my car instead. It became clear to me that college was not preparing me to be an independent adultFor me, college was basically summer camp. There are national grasslands, national forests, and huge tracts of unused scrubland managed by various federal agencies. I've gained a lot from being voluntarily homelessDon't get me wrong; it's lousy to live out of your car for many reasons.

In cities both small and large, some locals are calling out short-term rentals for making housing more expensive. The same question is perplexing local governments and fueling impassioned locals to weigh in: What should we do about Airbnb-style, short-term rentals? Jacob Boomsma/Getty ImagesFor Bozeman Tenants United, it's simple math: Bozeman homes should be occupied by Bozeman residents first, before out-of-towners. Formed in 2020, Bozeman Tenants United surveyed Bozeman residents on the most pressing issues in local housing and landed on short-term rentals. Fire Thunder said the increase of short-term rentals and vacation-owned properties is just one harbinger of a concerning trend.

Silverthorne, Colo., has reported mail-delivery delays of weeks or months. CRESTED BUTTE, Colo.—Residents of this small mountain town used to get their mail without incident, they said. A few years ago, something changed. Now, those who live in the ski community of 1,600, which has no home delivery of either mail or parcels, say they must wait in line for up to an hour during midday to pick up any package. In other Colorado towns, such as Silverthorne and Steamboat Springs, residents say mail delivery has ceased for weeks or months at a time.

Atlanta lawmakers want short-term rentals to be licensed and to fine owners who violate city laws. In some cities, government officials are trying to regulate the number of short-term rentals that investors can purchase. The debate over short-term rentals in Atlanta is emblematic of similar debates in other cities. For instance, voters in Colorado towns like Dillon, Aspen, and Steamboat Springs this year approved measures to tax short-term rentals to help regular homebuyers afford homes. There are more than 1,300 short-term rentals in Joshua Tree, according to AirDNA, compared with a population of 7,700.
Kid Dynamite died in a car accident in Germany in 1963, leaving behind two children, including a son, Herman. Most of the more notable heirlooms, such as the mouthpiece to Kid Dynamite’s saxophone, Herman said, were donated by the family to the Amsterdam Museum. LOS ANGELES — A dive boat captain pleaded not guilty Thursday in federal court for a second time to manslaughter in the fiery deaths of 34 people trapped below deck on his burning vessel three years ago off the Southern California coast. A federal grand jury issued a new indictment last month alleging that Captain Jerry Boylan acted with gross negligence aboard the Conception during one of the deadliest maritime disasters in recent U.S. history. A judge threw out the original case on the third anniversary of the Sept. 2, 2019, tragedy. Truth Aquatics is seeking to avoid payouts to the families of the victims under a provision in federal maritime law. The court is going to move along and try this man, try this captain who allowed our 34 to be killed and burned on that boat.”
On Tuesday, millions of voters nationwide casted ballots in favor of affordable housing measures. "It's especially heartening to see many ballot measures that support affordable housing pass this year with a clear majority of votes." Austinites aren't the only voters desperate for affordable housing. Kansas City voters gave the green light to a $50 million affordable housing bond that will create 2,000 units in the city. This year, lawmakers brought forward proposed affordable housing bonds via Measure U in Oakland, Measure L in Berkeley and Measure ULA in Los Angeles.
Colorado ski towns are struggling with low housing inventory, which is keeping prices high. The numbers suggest that while the Denver housing market appears to have peaked in April, median sale prices are still up year-over-year. Other popular ski towns like Frisco, Dillon, and Aspen have also passed similar laws. Other popular ski towns like Glenwood Springs and Estes Park are having similar struggles, the report suggests. Meanwhile, the average price of single-family homes in Estes have increased by 14.8% since October 2021 while the price of condos have jumped by 11.8%.
